Walk, Run or Bike at the Second Annual Northside across Canada (AC-8) in 8 Hours!

Velo Cape Breton, a local cycling club and the CAP Society of Cape Breton County invites you to participate in the Second Annual Northside AC-8 on August 24th. Support healthy lifestyles and active transportation by working together to achieve the goal of traveling the distance across Canada by bike or by foot.

The event starts on August 24th at 8:30 AM and finishes up at 4:30 PM. The meeting point is at Atlantic Casting in the Northside Industrial Park. A six kilometer route has been designated for the event on the North side (from Industrial Park, clockwise to Sydney Mines, and return via Purves St.) it is a simple and easy route with stunning scenery.

The event aims to have participants travel a combined distance of 7000 kilometers (the distance across Canada from Victoria BC to St. John’s NL) by walking, running and cycling. There will be volunteers at the lap checkpoint keeping track of the total distance traveled by each participant (these will be marked by 6km laps). There will be a flag raised for each province as the distance traveled reaches that provinces border. Last year the adventure ended in Quebec with a total distance of 4488 kilometers, just 2500 kilometers short of the goal.

“AC-8” is a popular health awareness event good for the mind, body and soul; an event to provide everyone with a safe and fun opportunity to support healthy lifestyles, learn about safe bike riding tips, walking and running techniques while promoting the implementation of CBRM's Active Transportation Plan. There will be paramedics and policemen on bikes. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Anyone can register to start to walk, run or cycle at any time and do as many laps as they can/want during the course of the event. Children under 10 years of age will need to be accompanied at all times. Helmets are mandatory for cyclists. Although there is a minimal registration cost involved to participate, i.e. $5 for individuals or $10 for
Families. There will be Pit Stops on the course providing free refreshments and snack food, bike clinics, riding tips and prize giveaways at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. The place will be set-up for a family participation, bring your picnic for lunch under the big tent.
